John Butler was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from The University of Tennessee in 1988 majoring in finance. He then attended Cumberland School of Law of Samford University where he was a member of the Cumberland Law Review and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1991. He joined Butler, Vines and Babb, and is admitted to practice before the Tennessee Supreme Court, the United States District Courts of the Eastern and Western Districts of Tennessee and the Eastern District of Michigan, and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Memberships include the Knoxville Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, and the Hamilton Burnette chapter of the American Inns of Court. John co-chairs a committee of the Knoxville Bar Association and conducts character and fitness interviews of new Bar applicants for the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility. John is a Hearing Committee member of the Board of Professional Responsibility appointed by the Supreme Court of Tennessee for District 2. In July 2017, John started his 3-year term as a Commission member of the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program (TLAP).
John and his daughter Sophie live on the lake very close to the office. They enjoy getting out on the water with friends after work and on the weekends when the weather cooperates. John also enjoys traveling to places off the beaten path, including Central America, Europe, and the Middle East. For exercise, John enjoys swimming, biking and hiking, although chasing Sophie around gives him all the exercise he needs!.
